As summer winds down and we head into the new academic year, we are still awaiting the National Labor Relations Board to issue a decision regarding our union election.
The NLRB is underfunded and overwhelmed, and we anticipate that it will be many more months until the board rules on our case. That being said, we have other options. For one, NYU could choose at any point to agree to a fair election process for us to establish recognition of our union, and drop their various challenges to our petition.
Last fall in November, we presented Linda Mills with an open letter inviting her to have a conversation with us about a process for elections to recognize our union. In response, she and NYU’s lawyers refused to meet with us and instead did everything they could to delay the process through 12 weeks of hearings before the NLRB. They didn’t believe that over 2800 researchers support our union, but our members provided powerful testimony making clear that NYU workers across campuses and positions are united in our demand for unionization.
Linda Mills still has not met with us once. We believe it is her obligation as the president of NYU to, at the very least, meet her workers face to face. We are forced to increase the pressure on Linda and the NYU administration to meet with us and agree to a fair election process.
