Unionized researchers have been organizing tirelessly this year to protect science funding. We’ve seen major successes fighting back against the federal government’s attacks on science and higher education together with academic workers across the country. But our fight is not over. The Trump Administration has proposed devastating cuts to NIH funding, and we have a critical window in which to act before the 2026 federal budget gets approved.
In order to prevent any cuts to scientific research, we are continuing to leverage the nationwide movement we’ve built to pressure officials in both political parties. Our ability to win more depends on showing our elected officials that we are all united in the fight to save science. The more of us who participate, the stronger our message will be. Postdocs here in New York, including those of us at NYU, are spearheading actions in the next two weeks to push for NO CUTS to our research.
On September 12, from 6-8 PM ET, New York researchers will gather for a town hall meeting at the Church of the Holy Trinity (316 E 88th St) to advocate for research funding. Congressman Jerry Nadler (NY-12) will speak, and with strong participation we will underscore the urgency of this issue.

Additionally, the Department of Homeland Security’s (DHS) proposal to shorten time limits for J-1 and F-1 visas to 4 years would cause great disruption to international students and scholars. This would add layers of bureaucracy to an already daunting and complicated process and would discourage international students and scholars from coming to the US. DHS is currently accepting comments on the proposed rule, so this is our opportunity to express opposition.
